IDC Robocon – Day 0 – Long-haul flight to Brazil

9 Jul

By Zuda Ng

Every year this season is the time for RoBoCon IDC (albeit a little earlier this year)! This year we are going to Brazil for our very own adventure! We were warned of the 22-hours flight but, well, that does not dampen our spirit! We are SUTDents!!!

We left for Brazil in the middle of the night on 7th of July (Sunday).

The first leg of our flight spanned 6 good hours and took us to Dubai of United Arab Emirates. We made use of the transit period to do some stretching/walking, hydrate ourselves and grab a bite before the final leg of our flight.

We did not forget to bring SUTD (flag) to Dubai!

Alas, we boarded the plane for the daunting 16-hours flight! I’m a non-frequent flyer who literally have no experience in long flights. This was my virgin long-haul flight! It was a physically and mentally demanding rigor!! I had endless sleep-wake-eat cycle that I had lost track of and slowly I crept to Brazil. Awesome Max!

When we touched down at Aeropuerto Internacional de São Paulo-Guarulhos (Sao Paulo International Airport), I felt like I was with my new-found love! Who wouldn’t when you get cool weather in a metropolis? The weather was so delightful that you get to enjoy the cooling breeze without the chill-down-the-spine kind of sensation! One word , SYOK!

Just when I was about to immerse in my relaxation mode, a piece of news arrived! The airport was another 2 good hours of Coach ride to our hotel! Oh man!! Luckily, we car-pooled (taxi-pooled to be exact) with friends from Tsinghua University to our hotel! Share taxi for the win! The taxi ride took us 45-minutes and set us back by 240 ‘reals'(Brazil]s currency) approximately $150!! Not exactly the wisest move but we were already shattered!

After grabbing some essentials and a quick-dinner, we just “dropped dead” for the next few hours!

The next time I had my senses on was 2am local time! Slept for 4 hours. Guess that’s what 26 (6+3+16+1) hours of travelling has done to our body clock! Glenn and I took the opportunity to appreciate the cool weather around our hotel area. We found a McDonalds and a huge supermarket after 20-minutes of walking.

Busy exploring the goodies !!

Taking part in an event like Robocon means that team members would have committed themselves. Commitment is a positive attitude that, i feel is not easy to find in today’s world of time and money. Keep it up and all the best.
